Qatar denounces horror committed by RSF in El-Fasher, Sudan
“We express our collective shock at the horrific atrocities committed in the city of El-Fasher in Sudan’s Darfur region and reaffirm our condemnation of these acts in the strongest terms,” Tamim declared during the opening ceremony of the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha.
Reports indicate that on October 26, RSF fighters seized control of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, and carried out ethnically motivated killings of civilians. Observers have warned that the assault could deepen the division of Sudan along regional lines.
“Sudan has endured the horrors of this conflict for over two and a half years. It is time to bring it to an end and reach a political solution that safeguards Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” the emir continued.
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has claimed thousands of lives, displaced millions, and triggered one of the most severe humanitarian crises worldwide.
Turning to developments in Gaza, Sheikh Tamim underscored the need for immediate international action “to address the catastrophic consequences” of ongoing Israeli aggression, urging global actors “to redouble its efforts and provide support to the Palestinian people for reconstruction and to meet their essential needs.”
“Social development cannot be achieved without peace and stability,” he added.
The three-day UN-led summit in Doha has drawn leaders and delegates from over 200 nations and organizations to deliberate on strategies for eradicating poverty, promoting social inclusion, and advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
